We spend so long learning how to apply makeup that we rarely ask why it exists, or why it works. A trend depends on the moment that made it possible, a base on how product sits on skin, a bruise on how colour sits under it. This trilogy covers both the thinking and the craft.
Each course is built in the order you’d learn it on the job. Makeup Knowledge takes you from ancient practices to twentieth-century advertising, from the stage to the screen, from drag to the beauty counter. Beauty Makeup starts with skin prep and base, then moves through eye shaping and blending to classic looks. SFX Makeup goes from tools and preparation through bruising, scars, bald caps, three-part gel, fake blood and prosthetics, to painting and removal.
I film each stage up close, mistakes included, because watching a problem get fixed teaches you more than watching a flawless result.
Some students come with a place on a university course ahead of them. Others want to build creatures at the kitchen table. Each course stands on its own, so you can start wherever you like. Take all three and you have the full foundation.

Hi, I’m Sophie
I am a qualified makeup artist for television, film and multimedia and have been for the last 6 years. I am autistic, which is part of the reason I teach the way I do, in depth and with structure! I won series three of Glow Up in 2021, aged 21, while I was still a student and ever since have been arguing that makeup education leaves out the half of the subject I find most interesting, the knowledge of why? Why do we do, what we do?
Since launching my first two courses I have taught over two hundred students and I runa a private group chat where I can speak with you and us with each other. Students tell me the thing they value most about it the courses is that there is no background music, no sponsorship and no product I am being paid to mention, it’s honest, always.
This autumn I begin a PGCE in art and design teaching at UCL, because the next thing I want to do is lecture.
