The Fundamentals of Makeup Knowledge
The bits your makeup education left out.
A field guide to the history, culture and theory behind makeup, the companion I wrote for my own students, now yours as a standalone download. Read it in an afternoon. Keep referring back for years.
Do you ever feel like you know how to do makeup, but don't really
understand why?
Let me help you.
Maybe you've learned techniques from tutorials and trends, but still feel like there's a bigger picture you're missing. I know that feeling.
Makeup isn't just about knowing what products to use or how to apply them. It's shaped by history, culture, fashion, art and society. And understanding where these ideas come from can completely change the way you see makeup.
This pdf is everything you need to build that foundation of knowledge, exploring the history, evolution and cultural context behind makeup.
You don't need to know everything already. You don't need to have studied makeup history or be an expert. Curiosity is enough to get started.
Whether you're a makeup artist, enthusiast, student, or simply someone who wants to understand makeup on a deeper level, this course will give you the knowledge and context to see makeup differently.
Because great makeup artists don't just master technique. They understand where makeup has been, why it matters, and how it continues to change.
I am a qualified makeup artist for television, film and multimedia and have been for the last 6 years. I am autistic, which is part of the reason I teach the way I do, in depth and with structure! I won series three of Glow Up in 2021, aged 21, while I was still a student and ever since have been arguing that makeup education leaves out the half of the subject I find most interesting, the knowledge of why? Why do we do, what we do?
Since launching my first two courses I have taught over two hundred students and I run a private group chat where I can speak with you and us with each other. Students tell me the thing they value most about the courses is that there is no background music, no sponsorship and no product I am being paid to mention, it's honest, always.
This autumn I start a PGCE at University College London to train as a teacher of art and design. The final course arrives the same month I go back to being a student again myself, which was not planned… but seems just right. Let's learn together.
Brands and Works
What They Say About Me
All of her ideas, they felt very modern. For me, a great make-up artist today has to be able to jump into a lot of different scenarios and I really felt she fulfilled that. And her creative mind was off the scales. She's an artist.
--- Val Garland, Glow Up judge & professional MUA
I think she has wisdom beyond her years... I look forward to working for her one day.
--- Brian Kinney, multi-Emmy award nominated MUA, known for his work on Walking Dead & Game of Thrones
The thing with Sophie that I really love to watch is her attention to detail. She really does examine every minor part of the look and it's really thought out. She's got this mind that really enables her to create and communicate through make-up, which is a rarity.
--- Dominic Skinner, Glow Up judge & professional MUA
She's so engaging... her sense of colour is incredible.
--- Lisa Eldridge, Celebrity MUA & renowned British MUA celebrated for her influential work across the beauty industry
